The electric component of the Escape Hybrid uses a 14.4 kWh lithium-ion battery pack with a dual-motor, front-wheel drive system to deliver an EPA-estimated 37 miles of plug-in electric range and 210 hp combined (slightly less than the 221 hp that Ford quotes for the gas-only version). This hybrid model can also be recharged in under 11 hours using a Level 1 / Level 2 AC charging port, though Ford says this will take as long as 3.5 hours with a 240-volt charger.

Aside from the plug-in hybrid, all Escape models get a freshened face with a wider grille featuring the brand’s ovoid logo, massaged fenders and bumper, a neater rear end, and a host of new wheel designs. The trim names have been tweaked to remove the old SE, SEL, and Titanium variants, while the top-level Platinum now includes the optional Co-Pilot360 suite of driver-assistance features.
A more high-def 8.0-inch infotainment touchscreen is standard across the board, and the PHEV and Platinum HEV models use a larger 13.2-inch display that can receive over-the-air software updates.
As a small crossover, the Escape’s cabin feels spacious, efficient, and pleasantly laid out. We like the commanding view from the driver’s seat and find the controls easy to reach and understand. It rides and handles well enough, too, although the Escape doesn’t feel as athletic as some competitors. Still, its observed fuel economy is impressive and it’s much more pleasant to drive every day than many alternative compact SUVs.
